About Data and Visualization

One of my colleagues asked me this week:
"What is the worst mistake when analyzing data?"

Sometimes data can play tricks on you. This might happen if you are settled with summary statistics, e.g., the mean, and neglect to explore the distribution of variables. To demonstrate the importance of exploration and visualization of the distribution by histograms or boxplots, I like to share the Datazaurus. I do so whenever I can, in courses, workshops, and mentoring. This example includes several cases in which means and standard deviations, and even correlation are almost identical. Still, the shapes of the distribution the two variables are creating are completely different. Let's not spoil the example too much, but rather encourage you to have a look yourself. I'm sure you'll adore the cute Datazaurus and always recall it before neglecting visualization in data exploration.
